Negative Space: Trajectories of Sculpture at ZKM Karlsruhe

ZKM Museum has invited the Estate of Buky Schwartz to participate in its exhibition Negative Space: Trajectories of Sculpture, on view April 6 – August 11, 2019, in ZKM_Atrium 1+2. Buky’s featured pieces are Videoconstructions segment 5 (1978) and The Chair (1980).
Since antiquity, the history of Western sculpture has been closely linked to the idea of the body — statues designed as solid, self-contained, weighty positive formations in space. Negative Space endeavors to change that dominant view by investigating the relationship between sculpture and space in a decidedly spatial way: open, surrounding, hollow, and intermediate spaces; mirror, light, and shadow spaces; virtual data spaces.
Featuring more than 200 pioneering artistic positions, the exhibition traces the trajectories of spatial sculpture along the lines of cubism, constructivism, neo-constructivism, and minimal art through to present-day installative, immersive environments. Curators: Peter Weibel, Daria Mille, Anett Holzheid.
